Here's a tip for the broke college kid:  buy your textbooks online.  I'm not talking about the quarterly old way; I'm talking one episode at a time delivered in .pdf format.

Why would you want a episode at a time?  You get your syllabus at the beginning of the semester, which tells you the required chapters for the semester.  Just think about it -  how often do you authentically go through an entire textbook?

I idea about buying the books, scanning the chapters I needed, then returning the books, but there's no way I would have manually scanned hundreds of pages.  Ebooks also came to mind, as they should be cheaper than a hard copy, so I went to looking.

Eventually I came across iChapters.com.  The thing I liked best is that they offer lots of books and you can buy individual chapters!  My Math 190 textbook ran me 0 used at my local bookstore, and we were only using 8 chapters.  I looked on iChapters and compared the price of the individual chapters at .99 each-  a total of .92 for the 8 chapters I needed.  Purchasing only the chapters I needed saved me about 41% off the price of a used book at the local bookstore.

The chapters aren't some washed out, scanned Pos .pdf's, they are authentically high quality Ocr scans, which means you can Ctrl+F and crusade the documents.  That's a godsend during homework and studying, much best than flipping aimlessly through pages.  iChapters also offer a free download of the first episode of a book as  a preview.

However, there's one thing that I hate - the safety of the .pdf.  If you want to entrance your material, you must login through the website and install (or authenticate through) their anti-piracy software.  You cannot open the .pdf's unless you have an internet connection, nor can you view the chapters and print them to a .pdf or .ps file.  I wish I could view the .pdf's offline without having to install any software, but that's just what they have to do to protect their content.

If you want to save Lots of money, then buying only the chapters you need will without fail do so.  You might not find all your books on iChapters, but it's without fail worth it even if you can find just one.  The more money for pizza and beer, the best :)

Be careful of the descriptions, too. proper usually means that the textbook is written in, highlighted, or is damaged in some way that does not preclude being able to read it. Like new and new descriptions are best. You need to know the price at the campus bookstore. It does not help you to buy online just to find out that the book sells economy at the campus bookstore (though this seldom is the case). What might happen, though, is that the campus bookstore purchases the textbook from the publisher bundled with supplementary required materials, such as a pupil version of software used in the textbook. Often the bundled textbook and materials cost less than purchasing a used book and the required materials separately. Order your textbooks from online bookstores well before class begins. Most college instructors are not sympathetic when you do not have the textbook you ordered but did not yet receive, especially when the campus bookstore still has copies available. Do not buy a used textbook hoping the answers to questions will be written in the book. Quite often, the answers are wrong, which will lower your grade. At any rate, the course does you no good if you do not learn the material. It is difficult to illustrate to prospective employers why you are not able to do a task if they know you received an A in the class that teaches the task. Using person else's answers is lazy, unethical, and immoral-and if you are caught doing so, could be grounds for removal from the college or university. Financial Aid refunds are most often given to students far too late to use them to buy textbooks for the semester in which the reimbursement is received. If you want to buy textbooks at a lower price, but must use Financial Aid monies, save back a quantum of the reimbursement for the following semester's textbooks.
