Textbooks can be a constant worry for a college student. While tuition may be covered by grants and loans, books are not often included as a consideration for school expenses. This can leave students in the lurch, unable to perfect prominent assignments or everyday reading. The effects of not being able to afford inescapable textbooks can wreak havoc with grades, so instead of buying right from your student book store, look into one of these other options.
Buy Used
College Textbooks
If you indubitably can't find the book everywhere else other than your student bookstore, then at least buy a used version. These are often significantly cheaper, and may even include useful notes from the person who owned it before.
Buy Online
Try checking out sites such as eBay.com, Half.com, or Amazon.com where independent booksellers can list their textbooks. Sellers must list the condition of the book when they put them up for sale on these sites. You can pick to buy a textbook with a worn cover, highlighting, or writing in it, and it will be incredibly cheap - often economy than buying used at a bookstore.
Rent Your Books
There are abundance of websites that allow you to rent textbooks, and return them at the end of the year. Try places such as Chegg.com, Textbooks.com, or Campusbookrentals.com.
Swap Your Books
There are abundance of ways to go about this. If you want a large selection, go online to a swap site, such as swap.com, and see if there are any textbook swaps going on in your area. You can also try to invent your own book swap. If you belong to a larger society, like a club, or a sorority, you could try to invent a get-together where everyone can trade their books around.
Another good way to go about this would be to make friends with person with your same major. Try looking person who is a year older, and ask if they will sell them directly to you when they are done with the books for classes that students in your major must take. Offer more than the book store buys them back for (you can regularly look these prices up online at the school bookstore site), and you'll still be paying far less than you would everywhere else.
Even if you can't find a friend in your same major who is farther ahead, you can still make a deal with person who is the same year as you to try and switch up the classes that you each take in a semester - that way, you can trade books back and forth.
Ask a Teacher
Schools often don't tell you this, but most need teachers to have the textbook, whether a corporeal copy or online, to loan out to students who indubitably cannot afford to buy the book for that class. Check in with a librarian at your school, and they should be able to tell you whether your school enforces this procedure or not. Then, go have a talk with your teacher. Even if your school doesn't have this policy, it's a good bet that the trainer will have extra copies anyway.
