Did you know that used text books sell time after time on a daily basis, but there are peaks through the year when you will sell more text books than any other time. These periods do differ where you live in the world and the school/university terms that they have. The major times where you will see a large upturn in the sales of used text books is when the main start dates are in your area.
You will be able to buy at great prices at the beginning of summer, this is due to the fact that students have closed school / university and do not want to carry these large books nearby with them sometimes half way round the world. This is where you can come in, buy at low prices, (sometimes get them for free), and hold on to the stock for a month or so and then sell them on eBay and other sites. By doing this you will make good profits.
College Textbooks
A word of advice, just do to go in and buy blind, gain some knowledge of the used text books. You can do this study in a few nights and then just keep on top of it from time to time. Some used text books get out of date very quickly. Books in the sciences, computer, and political fields tend to update on a regular basis. All you need to do is check when the last edition was published and then see if a new edition is due in the next few months, if not then you should still get a good price. Even the books that update on a regular basis, can get you some return as sometimes students do need older copies for research.
If you are dealing with the Arts these books tend to have a much longer shelf life, but still do some study as there is no point in buying a few hundred art books from a college, and find out that next week a new and updated text book is due out. This is a brand new one, first time in 25 years it has been updated. Honest this does and can happen, so do your research.
When you list your used text books online on sites such as eBay all the time check through the books to make a note of any markings, missing pages, and highlighting on the pages. As long as you are honest and open, you will not get any bad feedback. Also it is worth flicking through the books to make sure there are no book-marks. The book-marks I am talking of are letters, pictures etc. If you do find any of these just return them to the original owners.
To find customers have flyers made up, put adverts in the schools, colleges and universities saying you will help them by buying their used text books from them. Also you find they might ask you if you are concerned in buying other items from them as they do not want the hassle to move them to where they are going to. It is also worth while contact the offices at the places and saying if they have used text books left at the end of term you will take them off their hands for them.
As you can see, the used text book niche is large and will all the time be here. Students leave and new students come and all need text books and cannot afford new ones all the time.
